In a thrilling Eliminator match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, Mumbai Indians secured a hard-fought 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans on Friday. The win advanced the five-time champions to Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings, while GT was knocked out of the tournament.
Rohit Sharma played a crucial role in Mumbai’s victory, scoring 81 runs off 50 balls as they posted a challenging total of 228 for five. Despite a valiant effort from GT’s B. Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar, the Titans fell short, finishing on 208 for six.
Sudharsan’s impressive 80 off 49 balls and Washington’s 48 showcased their batting prowess, but Mumbai’s bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, managed to contain the Titans. Even after Sudharsan’s dismissal, GT’s middle-order batsmen tried to keep the chase alive, but Bumrah’s economical spell made the difference in the end.
Rohit, who was dropped early in his innings, combined with Jonny Bairstow to give Mumbai a solid start. The duo put on 84 runs for the opening wicket, setting the stage for a big total. Rohit’s aggressive batting, especially against the spinners, propelled Mumbai’s innings, while contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya with the bat added crucial runs towards the end.
Overall, it was a thrilling contest between two competitive teams, but Mumbai Indians ultimately emerged victorious to keep their hopes of another IPL title alive.
