The opening match of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) scheduled for March 22 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata is likely to be abandoned due to heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall in Kolkata until March 22. As a result, an orange alert has been issued for some parts of West Bengal during the same period.

The match was set to kick off with a grand opening ceremony featuring performances by popular singers Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and actress Disha Patani. However, due to the weather conditions, the game may not take place. This clash is significant as both teams have new captains, with Rajat Patidar leading RCB and Ajinkya Rahane leading KKR, with Venkatesh Iyer as his deputy.

RCB finished fourth last season, while KKR emerged as champions after a poor run in previous seasons. Kolkata has historically had the upper hand over RCB at the Eden Gardens, winning eight out of their 12 matches. This match would have been an important one for both teams to kick off the season, but the weather may have other plans.
