The BCCI has announced several rule changes for IPL 2025 following a captains’ meeting in Mumbai. Here are the key updates ahead of the first match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

One of the major changes is the lifting of the ban on applying saliva to the ball, which was originally implemented in 2020 due to COVID-19. This decision was made after captains reached a consensus.

Another new rule is the introduction of a second new ball in the second innings after 11 overs, but this only applies to night games to reduce the impact of dew. Umpires will have the final say on implementing this rule, and it will not be applicable for day games.

Captains will no longer face match bans for slow over-rates. Instead, they will receive demerit points and fines. Level 1 offenses will result in a 25-75% match fee fine plus demerit points valid for three years, while Level 2 offenses will result in four demerit points.

Additionally, the Decision Review System (DRS) has been expanded to include reviews for height wides and wides outside off-stump.

Overall, these rule changes aim to enhance the competitiveness and fairness of the IPL matches in 2025. Fans can look forward to seeing how these adjustments impact the games throughout the season.
