Cricket Australia has confirmed that the Big Bash League opener will be held in Chennai, with the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers set to play at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, December 12. The landmark fixture was announced by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese as part of the ‘G’day Namaste’ initiative to strengthen ties between Australia and India. This will be the first overseas fixture in Big Bash history, with the match to be broadcast live in India and Australia.
The match will serve as a ‘home’ game for the Renegades and will take place after the Australia vs New Zealand Test series opener. The event is partly supported by the Centre for Australia-India Relations and is expected to attract a large crowd at the 38,000 capacity stadium. CA is exploring playing conditions to account for potential monsoon season weather.
While CA views the match as a one-off event for now, they are open to making it an annual fixture pending government approval. The announcement has also sparked interest in potentially hosting an IPL game in Australia in the future. Both teams are looking forward to the historic opportunity to play in India and connect with millions of new supporters. WA Cricket and Cricket Victoria are also exploring privatisation opportunities for their respective teams.
