Suryakumar Yadav will be leading Mumbai Indians in their first match of the IPL 2025 season as regular captain Hardik Pandya is serving a one-match ban. Hardik, who was penalized for a slow over-rate in the previous season’s game against Lucknow Super Giants, will miss the opening match against Chennai Super Kings.
In a statement to the media, Hardik expressed his confidence in Suryakumar as the stand-in captain in his absence. This is not the first time Suryakumar has led the Mumbai Indians, as he previously captained the team in a match during the 2023 season.
Mumbai Indians’ head coach, Mahela Jayawardene, confirmed that the franchise has been notified by the BCCI about Hardik’s suspension for the opening game. Despite the setback, the team is focused on starting the season on a positive note and is counting on Suryakumar to lead them to victory.
With Suryakumar currently captaining the Indian T20I team, he brings valuable leadership experience to the Mumbai Indians squad. The team is determined to overcome Hardik’s absence and put up a strong performance in their first match of the season.
