Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant unbeaten knock of 87 runs off 41 balls led Punjab Kings to a five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in the IPL Qualifier 2. His innings knocked the five-time champions out of the tournament and secured a spot for PBKS in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The partnership between Shreyas and Nehal Wadhera, who scored 48 runs, set the tone for PBKS with an 84-run stand for the fourth wicket. Despite a rising required run rate, Shreyas shifted the momentum in PBKS’ favor by hitting three consecutive sixes off Reece Topley in the 13th over.
Although MI fought back by dismissing Wadhera and Shashank Singh quickly, Shreyas took on the responsibility of finishing the chase, guiding PBKS to victory with his calculated hitting against MI’s bowlers.
Earlier, MI posted a challenging total with contributions from Jonny Bairstow, Tilak Varma, and Suryakumar Yadav, with Naman Dhir providing late fireworks to push the total past 200 runs.
PBKS’ bowlers made a comeback with crucial wickets, including Suryakumar and Tilak, to restrict MI’s scoring. Chahal and Jamieson played pivotal roles in dismissing key batsmen, while MI captain Hardik Pandya failed to make an impact with the bat.
Despite delays due to rain, Shreyas’ decision to field first proved to be crucial in securing the win for PBKS and advancing to the final.
