Cricket Australia has made a significant move in the player retention battle by offering captain Pat Cummins a lucrative three-year contract extension worth AUD 4 million per year. The decision to offer Cummins this substantial contract comes after an IPL-affiliated franchise group made a $10 million proposal to Cummins and teammate Travis Head to leave international cricket and become full-time franchise players. In response, CA realized the need to provide competitive pay to retain their top players like Cummins.
This new contract represents a staggering 50% increase from Cummins’ previous retainer, making him one of the highest-paid Australian cricketers. Despite captaining Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, Cummins will actually earn more from his new national retainer than his current IPL salary. This move by CA is part of a larger strategy to secure the future of Australian cricket and prevent players from being lured away by the T20 gold rush.
