Former Indian opening batsman Aakash Chopra doesn’t believe that the perception surrounding Shreyas Iyer will change even if he wins an IPL trophy with Punjab Kings. Despite leading teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings to finals, Shreyas hasn’t secured a spot in India’s playing XI or been part of the World Cup-winning team. Chopra suggests that Shreyas’ aura will only change if he regains his place in India’s T20I team and leads them in the 2028 World Cup.

Chopra also attributes Shreyas not receiving due credit for KKR’s 2024 IPL win to Gautam Gambhir’s strong presence in the team. He highlights the difference in the narratives set by external figures like Gambhir compared to other successful Indian captains like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

The upcoming IPL 2026 season will see Punjab Kings face Gujarat Titans on March 31, marking Shreyas’ return to competitive cricket after a career-threatening injury last year. Chopra believes that Shreyas’ true recognition will come if he secures a spot in the Indian T20I team and leads them to success in future tournaments.
