IPL officials have decided to keep the Impact Player rule in place until at least the 2027 edition, despite calls from franchise captains to review and potentially revert to traditional 11-a-side contests. During the pre-season captains’ meeting at the BCCI headquarters, concerns were raised about the rule creating an uneven playing field and hindering the development of Indian allrounders.

Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to make substitutions at any stage of the match, leading to changes in team balance and reducing the importance of allrounders. Despite the reservations expressed by the captains, IPL and BCCI officials have clarified that any reassessment of the rule will not take place until after the 2027 season.

In addition to the Impact Player rule, a captain also suggested extending the option of a ball change midway through the second innings to counter heavy dew. However, the heads of the IPL’s match referees’ and umpires’ panels declined the suggestion, stating that the existing ball-change provision was sufficient to address dew in the later stages of a match.

Overall, the decision to maintain the Impact Player rule and delay any potential changes until after the 2027 edition of the IPL has been met with mixed reactions from franchise captains and officials. The future of the rule and its impact on team dynamics will continue to be a topic of discussion in the seasons to come.
