Shreyas Iyer played a crucial role in leading Punjab Kings to a thrilling five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 Qualifier 2. His quickfire 87 off just 41 balls not only helped Punjab secure the win but also made him the first captain to lead three different franchises to the IPL final.

Punjab’s assistant coach, James Hopes, commended Shreyas for his outstanding performance and cool-headed leadership during the post-match press conference. Hopes praised Shreyas’ batting as “pure class” and highlighted his ability to stay calm under pressure and execute his role effectively.

In the chase of a challenging target of 204, Punjab got off to a strong start with Josh Inglis smashing 38 runs off 21 balls. Nehal Wadhera then partnered with Iyer to put on a crucial 84-run stand in just 7.5 overs. Shreyas’ eight towering sixes helped Punjab seal the victory with six balls to spare, showcasing his captaincy and batting prowess.

Having previously led Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024, Shreyas now has Punjab Kings on the brink of their maiden championship. They are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final, guaranteeing that IPL 2025 will crown a new champion.
