Chennai Super Kings have finalized their opening combination for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad confirming that he will be partnering with Sanju Samson at the top of the order. This decision was revealed by Gaikwad during the Captains Day event in Mumbai, where he mentioned that it will be “Rutu and Sanju” opening the innings for CSK.
This means that Ayush Mhatre, who impressed as an opener last season, will likely be moved down the order. Mhatre, who scored 240 runs in seven innings at a remarkable strike rate of 188.97 in IPL 2025, had initially filled in for Gaikwad due to an injury. Despite his success as an opener, Mhatre is expected to adapt to a new role lower down the batting order.
The decision to go with Gaikwad and Samson as the opening pair was influenced by Samson’s impressive recent form, including being named Player of the Tournament in India’s T20 World Cup triumph. Samson’s consistent performances, particularly in must-win matches, further solidified his position in the team.
CSK had various options at the top of the order following Samson’s trade from Rajasthan Royals, which saw the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran also joining the team. By opting for the experienced duo of Gaikwad and Samson at the top, CSK is aiming to bring stability and firepower to their batting lineup.
The team’s decision on the opening combination reflects their strategic approach for the upcoming season, with an emphasis on experience and form. The fans will be eagerly awaiting to see how this new partnership fares in the IPL 2026.
