The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds the title of being the wealthiest cricket board globally, boasting a robust financial backbone with a reported revenue of Rs 20,686 crore in the 2024 fiscal year. This significant wealth primarily stems from media rights, notably the Indian Premier League (IPL), which fetched a staggering Rs 48,390 crore in 2022. Surprisingly, despite its billions in revenue, BCCI is exempt from income tax under Section 12AA of the Income Tax Act, as it is classified as a charitable organization focused on promoting cricket development. However, the board does pay Goods and Services Tax (GST) on IPL earnings. The government also earns through Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) on players’ salaries, with Rs 89.49 crore collected from IPL 2025 alone. Despite the tax-free status of the IPL, the government ensures a significant share of revenue through player salary deductions. Overall, BCCI’s financial prowess and tax exemptions highlight its unique position in the cricketing world.
