Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has made a significant change to their squad for the remainder of the IPL season by signing wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for the injured Vansh Bedi. Bedi, who was originally named in the playing 12 for a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, had to be replaced by Deepak Hooda due to his injury which has ruled him out indefinitely. Bedi was signed for Rs 55 lakh at the IPL 2025 mega auction, while Urvil went unsold at the same auction despite registering at a base price of Rs 30 lakh.
Urvil, a 26-year-old player, had a breakthrough domestic season where he smashed the second-fastest century in men’s T20 cricket by scoring an unbeaten 113 off just 35 balls for Gujarat against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He followed it up with another explosive century against Uttarakhand in the same tournament, establishing himself as one of the fastest Indian centurions in T20s.
CSK, a five-time champion, has had a disappointing campaign this season and has already been eliminated from playoff contention. With three matches remaining, the team led by MS Dhoni will look to address their weaknesses and identify a more settled playing XI for the next season. Urvil’s inclusion in the squad brings a new dynamic to the team and will hopefully help CSK finish the season on a positive note.
