The Sydney Sixers have appointed former Australian all-rounder James Hopes as their new Big Bash League coach, signing him on a two-year contract. Hopes, who represented Australia in 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is, will lead the Sixers in the upcoming 2026/27 season as they aim to end a six-year title drought.

“I’m incredibly honored to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and strong identity,” said Hopes. “I’m excited to work with the talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers’ success in the BBL.”

Hopes previously served as a bowling coach for the Punjab Kings in the IPL and the Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket. This will be his first head coaching role at the professional level. Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes praised Hopes for his cricket knowledge and experience, stating that he is a perfect fit for the team.

Hopes takes over from former coach Greg Shipperd, who was stood down in January after leading the Sixers for 11 years. Shipperd guided the team to eight consecutive finals appearances and back-to-back titles in 2020 and 2021. The Sydney Thunder are still searching for a new coach following the departure of Trevor Bayliss, while former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been announced as the new coach of the Blues.
