In a parallel universe, Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting could still be leading Delhi Capitals. Shreyas, who captained the team for seven seasons and took them to their first IPL final in 2020, had an exit that was not entirely amicable. In 2021, a shoulder injury sidelined him for the first half of the season, and Rishabh Pant took over as captain. However, Shreyas was not reinstated as captain when he returned, leading to his eventual departure from the team.
Similarly, Ponting, who coached Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2024, faced criticism for his lack of availability in India throughout the year. Now, the two former Capitals leaders have reunited at Punjab Kings, with Shreyas as captain and Ponting as coach. Since joining forces in 2025, they have turned Punjab Kings into a strong team, finishing as runners-up in 2025 and currently boasting five wins in six matches this season.
On the other hand, Delhi Capitals are struggling in the middle of the table after a strong start to the season. Their last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad highlighted their weaknesses, especially in the batting department. Shreyas and Ponting now have the opportunity to solidify Punjab’s position and show Delhi Capitals that they have moved on to better things.
The clash between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday will be a chance for Shreyas and Ponting to prove themselves once again. Published on April 24, 2026.
