There has been a debate online over Karnataka MLAs demanding free tickets to watch the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Bengaluru. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar supported the lawmakers, stating that MLAs have the right to free tickets as they are part of the government. The demand for free IPL tickets has brought together lawmakers from both the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP. The IPL 2026 season is set to begin with a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru. BJP MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the MLAs for seeking free tickets, prompting Shivakumar to suggest that Surya focus on his own party members. The issue was raised in the legislative assembly by Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, with support from various MLAs. The MLAs argue that as VIPs, they deserve special treatment and cannot be expected to stand in queues like the general public. This demand has sparked a debate over entitlement and privileges for elected representatives.
