The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed regret over the tragic incidents that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL-winning celebrations outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Following RCB’s 18-year wait for an IPL title, nearly two lakh fans gathered outside the stadium, resulting in chaos and the unfortunate death of 11 people, with 33 fans sustaining injuries.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged the lapses in planning and security measures for the celebratory event, emphasizing the need for proper precautions in organizing such large-scale celebrations. He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured individuals.
Saikia highlighted successful past celebrations, such as those after India’s T20 World Cup victory, where proper coordination between authorities ensured the safety of spectators. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal also expressed sadness over the tragedy and emphasized the need for a thorough inquiry into the events that transpired.
As soon as the unfolding tragedy was brought to his attention, Dhumal instructed the organizers to conclude the proceedings. He also mentioned the successful evacuation of spectators during an IPL game in Dharamsala, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the safety and security of fans during such events.
