Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined for a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Gujarat Titans. The Titans secured a top two finish in the Playoffs with a convincing 89-run victory over CSK, ending Chennai’s hopes of making it to the top four. This marks the third consecutive season where the five-time champions have failed to finish in the top four.
Gaikwad’s team had previously been penalized for the same offense in an earlier match, leading to a fine of INR 24 lakhs for the captain. The other members of the Playing XI, along with the Impact Player, were also fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower.
The IPL media advisory announced the fines on Friday, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the minimum over-rate as per the league’s Code of Conduct. The match took place on May 22, 2026, and despite their loss, Gujarat Titans cemented their position in the Playoffs while Chennai Super Kings were left out of contention for the top four spots.
