Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed concerns about the handling of Rishabh Pant at Lucknow Super Giants, suggesting there may be confusion regarding his role. Ashwin believes that assigning Pant a fixed role for the entire season would be beneficial and prevent any uncertainty.

The debate around Pant’s role began in Lucknow’s opening game of IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals when he unexpectedly opened the innings but only managed seven runs before being dismissed in a run-out. Despite criticism, Pant hinted at continuing in the same role, but Ashwin felt there was a lack of conviction in his statement, adding to the uncertainty.

Ashwin suggested that if he were in charge, Pant would open throughout the season and emphasized the importance of consistency in decision-making. Pant has a successful track record as an opener in T20 cricket, but the recent move seemed more tactical than data-driven.

The decision to have Pant open was aimed at creating a left-right combination at the top and preventing the opposition from using a left-arm spinner early in the innings. The outcome of this strategic move will be clearer in Lucknow’s upcoming game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
