V.K. Vismaya, a gold medal-winning quarter-miler at the Asian Games, has been suspended for two years by the NADA’s Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel after testing positive for a banned substance. The suspension comes nearly two years after she was provisionally suspended in 2024 for testing positive for Clomiphene, a banned substance classified as a hormone and metabolic modulator. Vismaya’s urine sample was collected during an out-of-competition test at her home in Perumbavur, near Kochi, in August 2024.

Despite claiming to have submitted a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) during the sample collection, Vismaya admitted to taking Clomiphene as a fertility drug prescribed by her doctor for legitimate medical reasons unrelated to enhancing her performance. The ADDP’s decision to suspend her for two years, effective from October 29, 2024, was recently made public by the NADA.

In a separate case, sprinter N. Shanmuga Srinivas has been handed a four-year ban by the ADDP for evasion, refusal, or failure to submit to sample collection. Srinivas was implicated in a doping scandal involving former junior national athletics coach N. Ramesh, who initially faced a provisional suspension but had it lifted by the Anti-Doping Appeal Panel of the NADA.

The suspension of Vismaya and Srinivas serves as a reminder of the strict anti-doping measures in place to maintain the integrity of sports competitions. The NADA’s actions demonstrate their commitment to upholding fair play and ensuring athletes compete on a level playing field. The cases highlight the importance of transparency and accountability in the fight against doping in sports.
