Royal Challengers Bangalore’s struggles at home continued as they suffered a five-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in the IPL match in Bengaluru. Despite putting up a valiant effort in defending a modest total of 96 runs, RCB could not secure a victory at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for the third consecutive time.
The match was affected by rain, and RCB found themselves in a difficult position right from the start after losing the toss. Batting first on a challenging pitch proved to be a tough task, and a questionable decision to drop Devdutt Padikkal in favor of leg-spinner Suyash Sharma further hindered RCB’s performance.
The move backfired as RCB struggled to reach 95 for nine in the reduced 14 overs. In response, Punjab Kings faced a scare when Shreyas Iyer and Josh Inglis were dismissed quickly. However, Nehal Wadhera’s composed innings of 33 not out off 19 balls sealed the victory for Punjab Kings.
Persistent rain delayed the start of the match by over two hours, but RCB’s top order failed to adapt to the conditions. Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Liam Livingstone attempted to accelerate the scoring rate but fell victim to the sticky pitch. The PBKS fielders took advantage of the situation, taking crucial catches to dismiss key RCB batsmen.
Despite Tim David’s fighting unbeaten half-century, RCB’s total was not enough to challenge Punjab Kings. The team’s total of 96 runs for nine wickets was reminiscent of their lowest T20 score at the venue, which was 82 runs in the inaugural IPL game in 2008.
Overall, RCB’s home woes continued as they faced another disappointing defeat in front of their home crowd.
