Norway international Morten Thorsby, expected to represent his country at the upcoming World Cup, is advocating for FIFA to strengthen heat protocols at the tournament. Thorsby, who founded the “We Play Green” movement in 2020 to promote environmental and climate issues, is among a group of players urging FIFA to prioritize player safety in the face of increasing heat risks.
In an open letter to FIFA signed by Thorsby and other players, concerns were raised about the potential heat stress players could face at the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Leading health experts also expressed worries about inadequate heat stress mitigation guidelines from FIFA, calling for measures such as cooling breaks during matches and improved cooling equipment in locker rooms.
Researchers have identified several World Cup host cities experiencing extreme heat levels, posing risks to players, officials, and spectators. FIFA has established a Heat Illness Mitigation and Management Task Force and implemented protocols like hydration breaks and climate-controlled benches for staff and substitutes.
FIFA has assured that climate conditions have been considered in the match schedule. With the tournament approaching, calls for stronger heat protocols persist to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved. The collective efforts of players, experts, and organizations aim to mitigate the potential health risks associated with extreme heat at the World Cup.
