Mumbai Indians have made a strategic move by bringing in Keshav Maharaj to replace the injured Mitchell Santner for the remainder of IPL 2026. Santner has been ruled out due to a left shoulder injury. Maharaj, a seasoned left-arm spinner and former captain of South Africa in T20Is, joined the squad just in time for MI’s crucial match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium. He wasted no time getting acquainted with the team, participating in training sessions and engaging in discussions with the leadership group, including Director of Cricket Rahul Sanghvi.

In the absence of Santner, MI opted for a like-for-like replacement, focusing on bolstering their spin department. Maharaj’s inclusion brings a sense of control, game awareness, and the ability to perform under pressure – qualities that have been lacking in MI’s inconsistent campaign so far. However, his addition also raises questions about how he will fit into the team’s existing spin resources, particularly with A.M. Ghazanfar leading the spin attack and Will Jacks as a potential option.

Despite being 36 years old with limited IPL experience (only two appearances for Rajasthan Royals in 2024), Maharaj’s late-season call-up presents both an opportunity and a sense of urgency. Having gone unsold in the auction last December, Maharaj now has a chance to prove his worth and make an impact in the remaining matches of the tournament. The integration of Maharaj into the playing XI will be a key decision for the MI think-tank as they aim to turn their fortunes around in the latter stages of IPL 2026.
