Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has boldly challenged the Indian Premier League, stating that the Pakistan Super League is rapidly growing and could soon surpass it as the world’s top franchise competition. Naqvi made these statements during a meeting of the PCB Board of Governors, citing increasing investor interest as a driving force behind his assertion. He believes that the PSL has become an attractive investment market, which will contribute to its future growth.
Despite Naqvi’s confidence in the PSL, there remains a significant gap between the two leagues in terms of media rights and revenue. The IPL’s media rights are valued at around USD 6 billion, compared to the PSL’s approximately USD 93 million. The IPL generates over USD 1 billion in annual revenue, while the PSL is estimated to bring in close to USD 60 million.
Recent rankings by the World Cricketers’ Association place the PSL fifth with 48 points, while the IPL ranks third with 62.2 points. The PSL’s ongoing season has also been marred by controversies, including incidents of ball-tampering and security breaches involving players. Despite these challenges, Naqvi remains optimistic about the PSL’s potential to become the world’s number one league.
