In the recent IPL match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted that their bowling plans failed to contain the Royals’ openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The Royals’ openers scored 80 runs in just five overs, setting the tone for the match which MI eventually lost by 27 runs in a rain-shortened game.

Jayawardene acknowledged that MI did not execute their plans effectively against the aggressive batting of Jaiswal and Suryavanshi. He emphasized the importance of executing plans properly in a game where margins are very small. Despite the early setback, Jayawardene believed that MI could have made a comeback with better partnerships and batting performance.

Reflecting on the match, Jayawardene mentioned that MI fell short by just four sixes in their chase. He highlighted the need for someone to play a quick innings at the top of the order to set the momentum for the team. Jayawardene credited the Royals for playing a good game and acknowledged that MI was not up to the mark in that match.

Additionally, Jayawardene revealed that left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner was rested as a precaution due to a niggle from the previous game. He expressed hope that Santner would be fit for their next game.

The match was a learning experience for MI, and Jayawardene emphasized the importance of working on their weaknesses to bounce back stronger in the upcoming games. The defeat against the Royals served as a wake-up call for the team to improve their performance in all departments.
