Shreyas Iyer’s selection for the Indian cricket team has been a topic of discussion lately. In 2024, he was dropped from the BCCI’s Central Contract list for not participating in domestic cricket as directed while not on national duty. Despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and Punjab Kings to the runner-up spot, Shreyas has only played 17 international games in the 50-over format.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes Shreyas has been unfairly treated, especially in the T20 format. He thinks Shreyas deserves a spot in the Indian team, possibly even as a captaincy option. Shreyas had a stellar IPL season in 2025, scoring 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07. This season, he has continued his good form, scoring three half-centuries in six games at a strike rate of 182.46.

Manjrekar believes Shreyas could fit in at number four in the Indian team, as he is adept at playing spin and taking singles on slow pitches. He also sees him as a potential captaincy candidate, especially with the lack of obvious options after Suryakumar Yadav. However, Shreyas’ inclusion in the Indian team is still uncertain. The decision is premature at this stage. The article was published on April 21, 2026.
