Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for overworking players and prioritizing revenue over their welfare. This came after reports of India head coach Gautam Gambhir expressing dissatisfaction with the packed schedule, including a Test match against Afghanistan right after the IPL in 2026.
Modi slammed the BCCI for their scheduling, stating that players need time off and should not be treated like “mules.” He urged the board to prioritize player welfare over financial gains, emphasizing that the IPL has already secured long-term financial stability.
The issue of workload management has been a recurring concern, with India frequently scheduling international fixtures immediately after the IPL. Some experts have suggested players should prioritize national duties over franchise commitments.
India Test captain Shubman Gill also highlighted the lack of preparation time before red-ball assignments, advocating for at least two weeks of camp ahead of Test series. Overall, there is a growing call for a balance between player welfare and cricketing commitments.
