Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals has been acquired by a consortium led by businessman Kal Somani for a staggering amount of Rs. 15,300 crore (USD 1.63 billion). The consortium includes backing from Rob Walton of the Walmart family and the Hamp family, with Sheila Ford Hamp, a member of the Ford family associated with the group.

Kal Somani, a US-based entrepreneur, has been an investor in Rajasthan Royals since 2021. He also holds stakes in the Motor City Golf Club and the Tomorrow’s Golf League, an indoor golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Somani is renowned for his work in the American technology sector, being the founder of IntraEdge, a technology services and solutions firm, and Truyo, a data privacy and artificial intelligence governance firm.

Following the acquisition, Rajasthan Royals now holds the title of the most expensive team in the IPL. The consortium members also own other sporting entities, with the Walton family owning the NFL side Denver Broncos and the Hamp family owning the American football team, Detroit Lions.

The deal marks a significant milestone for both Rajasthan Royals and the consortium led by Kal Somani. Published on Mar 24, 2026.
