Thirteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest player in Indian Premier League history, fulfilling his dreams of playing cricket at a young age. Hailing from Bihar, India’s poorest state, Vaibhav is the son of a farmer and part-time journalist. Despite his humble beginnings, Vaibhav’s talent has propelled him into the spotlight.
At just 12 years old, Vaibhav made his domestic debut in the Ranji Trophy and was later selected for India’s under-19 squad, where he impressed with a 58-ball century against Australia. His rapid rise continued at the IPL player auction in Saudi Arabia, where Rajasthan Royals secured him for $130,500, three times his base price.
Rajasthan Royals coach Rahul Dravid praised Vaibhav’s skills and potential, noting that the young player had undergone a trial with the team. Vaibhav’s father, Sanjeev, expressed astonishment at the bidding war that took place at the auction, calling it a massive moment for their family.
While Vaibhav is currently competing in the U-19 Asia Cup tournament in the United Arab Emirates, his father believes that Rajasthan Royals is the right team to nurture his son’s talent. Reflecting on the franchise’s history of grooming young players, Sanjeev expressed hope that Vaibhav would follow in the footsteps of past successes.
Described as a quiet and dedicated player by his state coach, Vaibhav’s passion for cricket is evident in his relentless pursuit of the sport. With the upcoming IPL season on the horizon, Vaibhav’s journey as the youngest IPL player is only just beginning, and his family and fans are excited to see where his talent will take him in the world of cricket.
