Captains are taking extra time during crucial phases of the game, leading to delays and financial penalties. Teams are expected to complete their 20 overs within the prescribed time limit, with escalating fines for repeat offences under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Punjab Kings’ captain Shreyas Iyer paid the biggest price this season, triggering the tougher second-offence punishment. Nine slow over-rate offences have been recorded, with captains like Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Hardik Pandya also being fined. The rise in fines is attributed to the aggressive batting line-ups and the strategic advantages gained by pausing play before crucial overs.
While some experts suggest imposing stricter penalties, there is currently no plan to introduce a run penalty. Teams are walking a fine line between tactical planning and disciplinary trouble, as a third slow over-rate offence could lead to a one-match suspension for the captain. As the playoff race intensifies, losing a captain for a key game could have a more significant impact than the financial penalties themselves.
