During the opening game of IPL 2025 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Kolkata, a pitch invader disrupted the match by making his way onto the field and embracing Virat Kohli. The incident occurred in the 13th over of the game, just after Kohli had scored his fifty and RCB seemed to be cruising towards victory. The match had to be momentarily halted as security personnel escorted the fan off the field.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in cricket. During the 2023 ODI World Cup final, an Australian national invaded the pitch wearing a white tee supporting Palestine and red shorts. He attempted to hug Kohli before being apprehended by security authorities.
Pitch invasions are not only disruptive to the game but also pose a security risk to players and officials. It is important for venues to have adequate security measures in place to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
The fan’s actions were captured in a photo where he can be seen touching Kohli’s feet after the player scored his fifty against KKR. These incidents highlight the need for increased vigilance and security at cricket matches to ensure the safety and integrity of the game.
