Matthew Hayden recently spoke candidly about how foreign cricketers view the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating that they consider the competition to be bigger than international cricket. This comes as the IPL 2026 is underway and has garnered attention, especially after Alastair Cook’s remarks. Cook had suggested that Jacob Bethell should consider playing in county cricket instead of sitting on the bench in the IPL, sparking controversy. Bethell, however, believes that being part of the IPL squad would benefit him more. IPL founder Lalit Modi and Kevin Pietersen have also criticized Cook’s suggestion.
Hayden, speaking on a YouTube show called All Over Bar The Cricket, emphasized how foreign players, particularly those from South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, view the IPL as a significant competition. He highlighted the immense hype surrounding the IPL, with cricket taking center stage every day during the tournament.
Meanwhile, the IPL 2026 has been action-packed, with Punjab Kings leading the table with an unbeaten streak. Teams like Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are also performing well. Youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been a standout player, scoring 254 runs in seven matches and making a mark in the Orange Cap race.
