The Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025 is experiencing a shift from the record-breaking 2024 season, where batters scored runs at an unprecedented rate. Sunrisers Hyderabad came close to achieving a 300-plus total early in the season but have since struggled, with no team reaching the 250-run mark in 50 matches. The overall run rate in 2025 is slightly lower than last year, indicating a more balanced competition between bat and ball.
While scoring rates in the PowerPlay and middle overs have remained consistent between 2024 and 2025, there has been a noticeable decline in the scoring rate in the death overs. The number of batters excelling in the final overs has decreased, with bowlers adapting their tactics and executing yorkers and full deliveries more effectively. Reverse swing has made a comeback, contributing to the bowlers’ success in limiting runs in the death overs.
Spinners have also made a resurgence in the death overs, with an increased wicket-taking ability and improved economy rates. Several venues in IPL 2025 have seen a drop in run rates compared to the previous season, indicating a shift towards a more balanced competition between bat and ball. Ahmedabad stands out as the only venue this season to see a significant increase in run rate, with a jump of 0.83 runs per over among venues that have hosted at least four matches. This improvement can be attributed to the better performance of spinners on traditionally batting-friendly pitches. In venues like Delhi and Bengaluru, spinners have shown a remarkable improvement in their economy rate and average compared to last season.
Other venues like Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, and ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam have witnessed a slight decrease in overall run rates this season.
Teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad have struggled to adapt to conditions, resulting in stagnating run rates this season. Bowlers have been using the pitch more effectively and relying less on swing during the PowerPlay overs. Despite a marginal dip in PowerPlay run rates from 2024 to 2025, bowlers have been able to contain the batsmen and avoid high scores in the first six overs.
In IPL 2025, the trend has shifted towards better bowling attacks dominating the tournament. Teams like Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, known for their economical bowling, are currently leading the standings. This season has showcased a balance between aggressive batting and disciplined bowling performances, making it an intriguing competition for fans to watch.
