The BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has implemented a ban on the use of smart sunglasses by players and match officials during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) due to concerns over their advanced communication features. These features enable live streaming, video calling, and text messaging through mobile data or Wi-Fi networks, posing a potential risk for corruption.
In a notice to IPL franchises, the BCCI ACSU highlighted that certain companies are promoting and selling smart sunglasses to players and support staff. These devices are classified as both ‘Audio/Video Recording Devices’ and ‘Communication Devices’ under the PMOA Minimum Standards, making their possession and use strictly prohibited within the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).
Players have been reminded of the ban on communication devices in PMOAs after Rajasthan Royals’ Romi Bhinder received a Rs. 1 lakh fine and a warning for using a phone in the team dugout during a match. The BCCI’s latest advisory instructs players and officials to surrender their smart sunglasses to the Security Liaison Officer (SLO) upon entering the PMOA on match days to avoid penalties for non-compliance.
The IPL has faced challenges this year with multiple code of conduct violations, leading the BCCI to enforce strict protocols such as restricting late-night outings without permission and prohibiting guests in players and support staff’s hotel rooms. These measures aim to safeguard the integrity of the tournament and prevent potential security risks.
