Ashwani Kumar, a 23-year-old cricketer from Punjab, made his debut for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2025 match against Kolkata Knight Riders. He was included in the starting lineup and impressed right away by taking the wicket of KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane off his first ball.
Ashwani is a left-arm pacer known for his skills in bowling during the death overs. Mumbai Indians signed him for Rs. 30 lakh during the 2025 mega auction, after he was part of the Punjab Kings squad in the previous season but did not get a chance to play.
Although Ashwani has only played four games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022, he has shown promise with three wickets at an economy rate of 8.50. He has also featured in two First-Class and four List A games for Punjab.
His standout performances in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 tournament caught the attention of Mumbai Indians, where he played for BLV Blasters and recorded best figures of 4/36.
Ashwani is one of the domestic players Mumbai Indians have given opportunities to this season, along with Kerala’s Vignesh Puthur and Andhra’s Satyanarayana Raju. The franchise is known for nurturing young talent and providing them with chances to shine on the big stage. Ashwani’s debut for Mumbai Indians is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the game.
