Ajinkya Rahane expressed disbelief when he was informed about Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket during a press conference after the Kolkata Knight Riders’ match against Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. Rahane, who was leading the Knight Riders, admitted that he had no prior knowledge of the news and was visibly taken aback. Rohit, aged 38, announced his retirement on Instagram, just a day after the national selectors discussed the leadership group for the upcoming tour of England. Rahane, a longtime teammate of Rohit, praised his successful transition from a middle-order batsman to an attacking opener in Test cricket. He commended Rohit’s adaptability and aggressive approach, which helped redefine India’s strategy post-2019. Rohit finishes his Test career with 4,301 runs in 67 matches, with an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. Despite retiring from T20Is, Rohit will continue to be available for ODIs and the IPL. Rahane wished Rohit the best in his future endeavors and acknowledged his contributions to Indian cricket.
