M.S. Dhoni has been named as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain for the rest of the Indian Premier League 2025 season after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury. This decision comes at a crucial time for the team, as they have been struggling with form. Despite starting the season with a win against Mumbai Indians, CSK has faced four consecutive losses.
Currently, CSK is placed ninth in the points table with just two points from five games. The table-topping Gujarat Titans have eight points from the same number of matches. With nine games remaining in the league stage, CSK still has a chance to qualify for the playoffs. They need to win at least six or seven out of their remaining matches to have a shot at securing the fourth spot.
CSK will be playing four of these crucial games at home, starting with the upcoming match against Kolkata Knight Riders. The team can draw inspiration from Kolkata Knight Riders’ successful run in 2014, where they went on a nine-game winning streak after a slow start to clinch the title.
Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK’s longest winning streak came in 2013 with seven consecutive victories. A similar run this year could see them through to the playoffs. Despite the challenges, CSK remains mathematically in contention and will be looking to turn their season around under Dhoni’s captaincy.
