The recent IPL auction in Jeddah was disappointing for Kerala as only two out of the 16 players registered were picked up by IPL teams. Sachin Baby was chosen by Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Vignesh Puthur, a relatively unknown left-arm wrist spinner from Malappuram, caught the attention of Mumbai Indians and was signed for Rs. 30 lakhs.

Despite not having much senior level experience, Vignesh had played for Kerala in the under-14 and under-19 categories. His performance in the Kerala Cricket League was unimpressive, with only two wickets in three matches. However, he managed to impress the Mumbai Indians talent scout during trials in Mumbai, especially head coach Mahela Jayawardene.

Vignesh initially bowled medium pace and spin before being encouraged to try leg spin by local cricketer Mohammed Sherif. He then moved to Thrissur to pursue his cricket career and excelled in the Kerala College Premier T20 league for St. Thomas College. His standout performances for Jolly Rovers Cricket Club earned him a spot in the Alleppey Ripples squad for the KCL, ultimately changing his career trajectory.

Excited about the opportunity to play alongside his heroes, Vignesh looks forward to the experience with Mumbai Indians. His journey from a relatively unknown player to being picked up by a prestigious IPL team is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport.
