India all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer hinted at possibly captaining Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being acquired by the franchise for a staggering INR 23.75 crore at the mega auction in Jeddah. This announcement came shortly after KKR engaged in a fierce bidding war to secure Venkatesh, a move that surprised many as they did not retain IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer.

Despite attempting to re-sign Shreyas at the auction, KKR eventually dropped out of the race and focused on acquiring Venkatesh. The all-rounder, who served as the vice-captain to Nitish Rana in the 2023 season, expressed his readiness to take on the captaincy role if given the opportunity. He emphasized that leadership is about creating a conducive environment for everyone to contribute towards the team’s success.

Venkatesh, who became the third-most expensive buy at the IPL auction, expressed his gratitude towards KKR for showing confidence in him and reiterated his excitement to be part of the team again. The franchise also acquired several other players during the auction, including Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, Angrish Raghuvanshi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Vaibhav Arora, and Mayank Markande.

Overall, KKR made a total investment of INR 49.25 crore in acquiring new talent for the upcoming season. Venkatesh’s statement about potentially captaining the team has sparked excitement among fans and will be interesting to see how he leads the team in their quest to defend the championship and continue their winning streak.
