Cricket Australia has decided against relocating the Sydney Thunder to Canberra, opting to give the team an extra home match at Sydney Showground this season. ENGIE Stadium will host four Big Bash League matches, including a Sydney derby between the Thunder and Sixers on December 21. Despite criticism of the turning deck at ENGIE Stadium, CA’s general manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, emphasized the Thunder’s commitment to western Sydney. Thunder captain Chris Green also expressed his desire to remain in Sydney, dismissing rumors of a permanent move to Canberra. Manuka Oval will host two BBL matches this season, while Cricket ACT is pursuing entry into the Big Bash competitions. The BBL fixtures for the 2024/25 season have been released, with the tournament starting on December 15. The schedule includes matches at various venues across Australia, culminating in the final on January 27. The Thunder and Stars will play at Manuka Oval on December 28, highlighting the continued importance of Canberra as a BBL venue. Despite speculation, the Thunder remains rooted in western Sydney, showcasing their dedication to the region and their home ground at Sydney Showground.
