Steve Smith expressed concern about a potential need for surgery on his elbow injury that delayed his inclusion in the Test team. He plans to ease into training at a camp in Dubai to ensure his fitness to captain Australia in the upcoming match against Sri Lanka. The 35-year-old sustained the injury while playing for the Sydney Sixers in a Big Bash League match and was in an elbow brace over the weekend. Despite having previously undergone surgery on the same elbow, Smith is optimistic that he will be able to play with the help of some tape. Scans revealed that his ligament was intact, although he will need to avoid throwing for a while. Smith is confident that he will be able to bat with the support of tape on his elbow. He has been participating in light training sessions and physiotherapy to improve his movement and hopes to be ready for the first Test on January 29. Smith is taking precautions to prevent hyperextension of his elbow during batting, as he did successfully in previous tournaments. Despite the setback, he remains positive about his ability to lead the team in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
