Cricket fans have something new to look forward to this Big Bash season, as Cricket Australia has introduced a rule that allows spectators to keep a match-day ball hit for four or six during the opening over of each innings. This initiative, known as the “Westpac Keep the Ball” program, will debut this weekend during the WBBL season-opener. If a ball is claimed by a fan, a new ball will be used for the second over to ensure both teams play with a ball of the same age for the remaining 19 overs.
In the event that multiple balls are hit over the fence in the opening over, replacements will be provided by umpires to minimize delays and keep the game moving smoothly. Additionally, a countdown timer for each innings has been reintroduced, requiring teams to bring an extra player inside the fielding restriction circle if they fall behind the required over rate.
This fan-friendly initiative has been supported by Cricket Australia’s new bank sponsor Westpac, with the aim of enhancing fan engagement and bringing supporters closer to the game. Alistair Dobson, the executive general manager of the Big Bash Leagues, emphasized the importance of player connection and fan-focused innovation in driving the success of the competitions.
The WBBL season kicks off with a triple-header this Sunday, while the Men’s competition is set to begin on December 14 with a match between the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. Don’t miss the excitement of the Big Bash this summer!
