South Africa’s bowling department has suffered another setback as Gerald Coetzee, who was expected to replace Anrich Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad, was left out of the Joburg Super Kings XI due to a hamstring issue. Coetzee’s participation in the upcoming SA20 matches is uncertain as his fitness levels are being closely monitored.

Coetzee recently made a comeback from injury and was hoping to showcase his pace-bowling skills in the match against Pretoria Capitals. However, his exclusion raised eyebrows as he had just returned to competitive cricket after a long layoff.

Despite being in contention for a spot in the Champions Trophy squad, Coetzee was left out in favor of the more experienced Nortje. With Nortje now sidelined with a back problem, the selectors may have to consider other options like Kwena Maphaka or Corbin Bosch to bolster the pace attack.

Injuries have plagued South Africa’s fast bowling resources, with several key bowlers like Ngidi, Mulder, Williams, Baartman, and Burger facing fitness concerns. The team will have to rely on the remaining fit bowlers to step up and fill the void left by the injured players in the upcoming matches.
