The upcoming edition of the SA20, season four, is scheduled to commence on Boxing Day in 2025. This decision was announced recently, with the league solidifying dates for the next three seasons leading up to this year’s playoffs. By moving the start of the league to Christmas week, which is a prime time in the South African cricket calendar, the organizers took advantage of a lack of home Tests scheduled for the 2025-26 summer.
Seasons five and six will return to their usual second-week-of-January start dates, likely beginning on January 9 in both 2027 and 2028. These seasons are expected to be slightly longer than the ongoing one. The dates provided by CSA are not exact start and end dates but rather windows within which the league will take place.
In the 2025-26 season, South Africa will embark on an all-format tour to India in November-December before returning home for the SA20, which is set to conclude by January 26. Following that, South Africa will host West Indies for a T20I series.
The decision to start the SA20 on Boxing Day will have implications for player availability, particularly with the Ashes series in Australia running until January 8. This could potentially impact players like Joe Root, who topped the run-scoring charts in the previous season. Despite potential clashes with other leagues like the Big Bash League in Australia and the Bangladesh Premier League, the SA20 organizers are confident in the scheduling decisions made for the upcoming seasons.
