Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad overcame injury concerns to lead his team in the IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals at the Chepauk on Saturday. Gaikwad had sustained an injury after being hit by a delivery on his arm during CSK’s previous game against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.

There were doubts about Gaikwad’s availability for the match, with Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey suggesting that former captain MS Dhoni could take over the captaincy if Gaikwad was unable to play. However, Gaikwad managed to recover in time and led his team onto the field.

Hussey had playfully hinted at the possibility of Dhoni taking on the captaincy role in Gaikwad’s absence, stating, “We haven’t thought about that [Gaikwad’s replacement as captain] too much. We have got some young guy coming through. He is behind the stumps. He has got a little bit of experience in that role so maybe he could do it,” with a reference to Dhoni.

Ultimately, Gaikwad’s determination and resilience allowed him to lead his team in the crucial match against Delhi Capitals. His presence on the field provided a boost to the team, and his leadership skills were instrumental in guiding Chennai Super Kings to a competitive performance in the match. Despite the injury scare, Gaikwad’s commitment to the team and his ability to overcome challenges showcased his importance as a key player for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 season.
