Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has suggested that Big Bash final hero Mitch Owen should replace injured all-rounder Mitch Marsh in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad. While Aaron Hardie is also considered a potential replacement, Ponting believes Owen’s recent performances make him a strong candidate for the 15-player squad.

Owen, who impressed with a quick century in the Big Bash League, has earned an international contract and has shown his bowling skills as well. Despite differing opinions from former players like David Warner and Mark Waugh, Ponting believes Owen is well-suited to fill Marsh’s spot in the squad.

With Pat Cummins unlikely to participate in the tournament due to an ankle issue, potential captains for the series include Steve Smith and Travis Head. Coach Andrew McDonald is considering both players for leadership roles in Cummins’ absence.

All-rounder Cameron Green is also close to returning from back surgery, but selectors are aiming for his comeback in Australia’s World Test Championship match against South Africa in June. Despite setbacks, Green expressed eagerness to resume his cricketing career.

The Champions Trophy squad includes players like Alex Carey, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc. The final squad will be confirmed after medical assessments and discussions with the potential captains.
