During an IPL 2025 match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, opener Ryan Rickelton had a lucky escape thanks to a rule regarding the wicket-keeper’s position. Initially, Rickelton was caught by SRH skipper Pat Cummins off the bowling of Zeeshan Ansari and began to walk back to the pavilion, thinking he was out. However, the third umpire intervened and noticed that SRH keeper Heinrich Klaasen had pushed his gloves in front of the stump while Rickelton was playing the shot. This action violated the MCC rule 27.3, which states that the wicket-keeper must remain behind the wicket at the striker’s end until the ball is either played by the batsman, hits the bat or the batsman, or passes the wicket. In this case, the striker’s end umpire should have called a no-ball as soon as the violation occurred. This meant that Rickelton was given a second chance at the crease due to the wicket-keeper’s error. The incident highlighted the importance of following the rules and regulations set by the MCC to ensure fair play and accurate decision-making in cricket matches.
