Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) seemed to be on the path to finally breaking their 17-year Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy drought, but fate has dealt them a difficult hand. As the IPL restarts on May 17 after tensions between India and Pakistan eased, RCB has the opportunity to secure a spot in the Playoffs with a win against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, injuries and players leaving for national duty have thrown a wrench in their plans, with as many as five key players potentially missing the crucial matches.

Devdutt Padikkal, the team’s No. 3 batter, is already sidelined with a hamstring injury. Star bowler Josh Hazlewood and captain Rajat Patidar are also facing fitness concerns. Hazlewood missed the recent game against Chennai Super Kings due to a shoulder issue and has been named in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship final in June. Patidar, who sustained an injury while fielding against CSK, did not bat in a practice session and is being closely monitored ahead of India’s tour of England.

The English duo of Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell have already left for England, where they are set to play in an ODI series against West Indies starting on May 29. West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd, who played a key role in RCB’s recent victory, is also slated to feature in matches against Ireland. With uncertainties surrounding player availability due to international commitments, RCB faces a challenging road ahead in their quest for IPL success.
