Pat Cummins is looking to make his comeback from an ankle injury during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season and is optimistic about being fit to lead Australia in the World Test Championship final.
The talented fast bowler battled through discomfort during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against India in Sydney, as his long-standing ankle issue resurfaced following Australia’s thrilling victory at the MCG. This injury kept him out of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, a tour he was likely to miss anyway due to personal reasons as he welcomed his second child with wife Becky. He also missed the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
Cummins expressed his gratitude for the time spent with his family and the opportunity to focus solely on them without the pressures of training or touring. He mentioned missing watching his teammates play on TV but praised their performances during the Sri Lanka series.
The 31-year-old has started running again and is aiming to be fit for the IPL where he plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He believes the intensity of the T20 tournament will serve as excellent preparation for the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in June and the subsequent Test series in the Caribbean in July.
Cummins plans to gradually increase his bowling workload over the next week to ensure his readiness for the IPL. He sees the T20 format as beneficial for building up his bowling fitness and intensity ahead of the important Test matches that lie ahead.
