Durban’s Super Giants (DSG), the runners-up in last season’s SA20 tournament, have been knocked out of the playoffs after a disappointing campaign that saw them lose six matches. They are currently at the bottom of the points table with only one win out of nine matches so far. Captain Keshav Maharaj attributed their struggles to poor performances in the powerplay, both while batting and bowling.
In their seven batting innings, DSG only managed to score more than 50 runs in the powerplay once, which was the game they won three weeks ago. They experimented with four different opening batsmen but failed to gather enough runs compared to other teams. Their top two batsmen collectively scored 230 runs at an average of 16.42, while their opponents Paarl Royals’ openers have been more successful, scoring 580 runs at an average of 44.61.
One major mistake DSG made was using Quinton de Kock as a No. 4 batter instead of an opener, despite his success in that position at the international level. This decision did not pay off, and de Kock struggled to make an impact in the middle order. Additionally, middle-order batter Heinrich Klaasen also struggled to perform consistently throughout the tournament.
DSG’s bowlers also faced challenges, particularly in the powerplay overs where they failed to take enough wickets or restrict the opposition’s scoring rate. The absence of a leader in the pace attack may have contributed to their bowling woes.
Despite their poor results, captain Maharaj remains committed to leading the team and believes in the camaraderie among the players. DSG will play their final game against Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Saturday. Please provide the content that you would like me to rewrite.
